Pain Awareness Month: Recognizing and Addressing Chronic Pain

Submitted by: Griselda Martinez-Longfall

Each September, Pain Awareness Month brings attention to an often invisible but deeply impactful issue—chronic pain. Millions of people across the United States and around the world live with chronic pain. Chronic pain is defined as persistent or recurring pain that lasts for at least three months.

It is characterized by:
Duration: Pain that persists for an extended period, typically exceeding three months.
Intensity: Pain that can range from mild to severe.
Persistence: Pain that may be present continuously or may come and go over time.
Impact on daily life: Pain that interferes with daily activities, such as work, relationships, and sleep.

The campaign, recognized nationwide, is designed to:

Educate the public about the prevalence and impact of chronic pain.

Promote awareness of effective pain management options.

Advocate for better access to treatments, resources, and support.

Encourage individuals to seek help if they are struggling with ongoing pain.

Supported by leading organizations such as the American Chronic Pain Association, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and the American Society of Anesthesiologists, Pain Awareness Month emphasizes that no one should suffer in silence.

By sparking dialogue, expanding resources, and breaking down stigma, the campaign highlights the importance of proper treatment and the hope of better quality of life for those living with pain.

This September, communities, healthcare providers, and advocacy groups are encouraged to join the movement—whether by sharing resources, supporting loved ones, or learning more about chronic pain management. The message is clear: awareness is the first step toward action, healing, and compassion.
