Prepare Your Skin for Winter: Tips to Combat Dryness

Article by Griselda Martinez-Longfall

As winter approaches, it’s essential to prepare for the harsh weather. While we all know the importance of bundling up with warm coats, scarves, hats, gloves, and proper footwear, many of us overlook another vital aspect: winter skincare. Cold weather, with its low relative humidity, can wreak havoc on your skin, leaving it dry, flaky, and irritated. Indoor heating only exacerbates the problem, further depleting your skin’s moisture.

Common signs of dry skin include:
– Flakiness or scaliness
– Redness
– Rough texture
– Itchiness
– Raw, irritated skin
– Cracks in the skin
– Stinging or burning sensations

To keep your skin healthy and hydrated during the colder months, it’s important to moisturize daily with a thick, oil-based moisturizer to lock in hydration and protect your skin. Cleanse gently to avoid stripping your skin of natural oils, as harsh soaps and over-cleansing can cause dryness. Limit your use of hot water by opting for shorter, lukewarm showers, which help prevent additional drying. Incorporate a humidifier into your home to add moisture to the air, keeping your skin from becoming overly dry. When heading outdoors, protect your skin from biting winds with scarves or masks, and avoid prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures, as extreme cold can cause damage. Remember to apply sunscreen even in winter, as UV rays remain present and can harm unprotected skin.

When to Seek Medical Help
If you’ve tried home remedies without relief or notice certain symptoms, it may be time to consult a doctor. These include severe dryness that doesn’t improve with over-the-counter products, worsening of an underlying skin condition like eczema, cracks or bleeding in the skin, painful rashes or persistent discomfort, or rashes accompanied by concerning symptoms such as changes in cognition or breathing.

By taking these steps, you can keep your skin healthy, hydrated, and protected all winter long. If you experience persistent issues, don’t hesitate to seek professional advice.
