On Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 6:00 pm, Woodcrest Emergency Services hosted a “Winter Ready at Woodcrest” informational event, featuring both the Woodcrest Police Department and the Woodcrest Fire Department. Upon entering, I noticed numerous informational signs placed throughout the room, covering various topics to help attendees prepare for winter.
The first tip focused on dressing for the weather. A warm winter coat, hat, gloves, and scarves are essential items for the colder months. One sign discussed the dangers of black ice, so I asked for the best way to avoid it. Reign Vermillion replied, “The best way to avoid black ice is to not drive—take the bus,” she smiled. “But if you have to drive and it’s below freezing, take it slow and be cautious. Make sure your car is well-maintained and has good tires.”
Another sign provided information from the National Weather Service on winter safety for families. It was packed with useful advice. If you missed the event, a photo of the signage is available below.
The emergency services crew had clearly put a lot of thought into the event. Not only did they organize a raffle for a snowmobile, but they also hosted a coat giveaway, thanks to a generous donation from the Greek organization TAO. The giveaway included coats in various sizes and colors for both men and women. There were two snowmobiles up for raffle: a stunning blue one and a bright pink one. The lucky winner of the raffle was Griselda Martinez-Longfall.
As we gathered for the event, the aroma of delicious food filled the air. Little Seoul catered the event with a buffet featuring a wide array of dishes, which received enthusiastic praise from everyone.
Overall, the event emphasized the importance of dressing properly for winter, understanding the risks of being unprepared, and taking key safety precautions. It was a well-organized event that left attendees better equipped for the cold months ahead.
