This past Saturday, Woodcrest University hosted its 2024 Student Council debate in the campus theater hall, drawing an eager crowd of students and faculty. The event provided a platform for the four candidates—Abbie Vicious, Lynn Reid, Mandie Romano, and Xander Bell—to present their visions for the future of the university.

As the debate commenced, candidates faced a series of questions designed to gauge their plans for enhancing student engagement and fostering inclusivity on campus. When asked, “What is your plan to increase student engagement and make campus activities more inclusive and accessible to all students?” Mandie Romano responded passionately. She emphasized the need to focus on initiatives that improve the school environment while delivering what students genuinely want. Mandie expressed her intention to collaborate with local businesses and engage directly with the student body to understand their interests better.

Abbie Vicious took a slightly different approach. She stated her commitment to working closely with student organizations, aiming to support cultural, academic, and social clubs that represent the university’s diverse communities. Abbie believes that collaboration with these groups is essential for fostering an inclusive atmosphere that resonates with all students.

Lynn Reid acknowledged the importance of inclusiveness but suggested that it should not be mandated for everyone. She outlined her plans for a two-step program that includes collaborating with The Beaver Pride newspaper. This initiative would invite Woodcrest University members to share their thoughts and ideas on upcoming events. Additionally, Lynn plans to implement public polls to gather input from students, allowing them to vote on the types of activities they wish to see on campus.

Xander Bell brought a unique perspective to the discussion. He expressed that if students choose not to engage, that is their personal decision. He advocates for allocating more funds to the performing arts department, suggesting that fundraising events could enhance opportunities for those interested in the arts.

The debate also touched on Woodcrest University’s commitment to diversity. When asked how each candidate would foster a more inclusive environment for students from varying cultural, socioeconomic, and academic backgrounds, Lynn reiterated her belief in open forums. She plans to create spaces where students can share their experiences, ensuring that campus events reflect the diverse cultures and interests present at Woodcrest. Lynn also aims to push for more accessible resources, such as scholarships for students in need and support systems for those facing academic challenges.

Mandie, leveraging her experience as a newspaper reporter, shared her desire to collaborate with the editor to establish a dedicated section for diversity in the campus publication. She emphasized that inclusiveness should extend to everyone, regardless of status, race, culture, national origin, or sexual orientation. Mandie suggested organizing a Diversity Festival, providing a platform for students to showcase their cultural backgrounds and express what diversity means to them.

Xander echoed the sentiment that every student should be able to study at Woodcrest without facing harassment or exclusion. His plan focuses on reminding the student body of their inherent equality and fostering a community where everyone feels safe and supported.

Abbie highlighted her commitment to fostering inclusivity by promoting diverse representation in decision-making processes. She plans to create programs that celebrate various cultures and ensure that campus resources are accessible to students from all backgrounds. Abbie is particularly focused on eliminating financial barriers that might hinder participation in campus activities and providing platforms for underrepresented voices to be heard.

As the debate progressed, candidates tackled additional questions, providing thoughtful and compelling answers that illuminated their characters and values. The event not only showcased the candidates’ ideas but also fostered a sense of community among students.

Voting will take place from Wednesday through Friday. Students will have the opportunity to cast their votes at a kiosk located outside the student council room in the administrative building. This election is a critical moment for the Woodcrest community, and each candidate is eager to contribute to the university’s future.
