DOE Skate and Game Night

Article and photography by Mandie Romano

On September 27th, Delta Omicron Epsilon (DOE) held an exciting Skate and Game Night in the quad of the college campus, and it certainly was an evening to remember! The atmosphere was lively, with a square wooden floor illuminated by charming lanterns that set a delightful tone for the festivities. While the intention was to create a fun skating experience, the actual event unfolded in a rather unexpected manner that highlighted the spontaneity of the attendees.

As we arrived, the refreshment area greeted us with an array of snack foods and drinks, making it the perfect spot to fuel up before hitting the floor. DOE’s DJ Didi was spinning lively tunes, and the energy in the air was palpable. However, as soon as the music started, rather than taking to their skates, the majority of attendees began to dance on the floor, creating a spontaneous dance party.
Reflecting on this phenomenon, it became clear why most people opted to dance instead of skate. The square shape of the floor seemed to encourage a festive gathering for dancing rather than the familiar circular skating experience many might have anticipated. While I initially wondered about the choice of the space, I ultimately embraced the vibe. Dancing in skates added an amusing twist, and seeing everyone enjoy themselves was truly infectious.

One area that felt a bit underused was the game section, which was located a distance away from the main activities. It seemed like a missed opportunity to have interactive games integrated more closely with the skating and dancing. In hindsight, if the skating space had been rink-sized, it could have allowed for a more dynamic layout with games positioned in the middle, encouraging everyone to engage in a variety of activities simultaneously. Yet, this is a minor critique reflective of my tendency to overthink event layouts—what truly mattered was the joy radiating throughout the night.

In conclusion, despite any logistical quirks, DOE’s Skate and Game Night was a remarkable success. It fostered community spirit, laughter, and connections among students. I left the event feeling uplifted and highly entertained. I wouldn’t hesitate to attend another one of these nights if DOE decides to host it again in the future. Bravo to the team for creating an enjoyable and memorable evening!
