Last Saturday, August 24, the competition pool at the Athletic Center was alive with the steady rhythm of dedicated swimmers. With its five lanes, the pool became a stage where commitment and perseverance prevailed. Coach Laci Rossini, a seasoned mentor, led the morning’s practice, honing the skills of two standout team members: Bobb Dragoone and Mila Rose. The intensity in the air was palpable as Rossini, known for her demanding yet supportive coaching style, guided the two students through lap after lap, each stroke a testament to their dedication.
Coach Rossini’s passion for swimming is evident in her approach to coaching, when she steps in for Coach Violet Hambrook on Saturdays. When asked what it takes to succeed on the team, she emphasized, “Basic swimming skills, good fitness, and the motivation to win.” Coach Rossini’s presence was both commanding and encouraging, her voice cutting through the ambient noise of the pool as she offered tips, corrections, and praise. Each lap was an opportunity for refinement, every stroke bringing them closer to their season’s goals. Throughout the practice, Bobb displayed a combination of power and technique, pushing through each lap with the determination of a swimmer who knows every second counts. Mila, equally impressive, showcased a fluidity in her movements that made her laps look almost effortless.
After practice, I spoke with Bobb and Mila about their experiences. Mila, who balances her time between the swim team and the cheer squad, said, “When not going to cheer practice, I like to keep fit. I enjoy swimming, so it’s a good choice for me.” Bobb added, “I’ve met some people, and swimming has helped bring me out of my shell. I tend to be a bit of a loner.”
As our conversation continued, I asked them what advice they would give to someone considering joining the team. Bobb reflected before responding, “Definitely give it a try. Don’t worry if you’ve never done it before. Violet and Laci are great about spending time with people to get them going. The team is helpful too—we don’t judge new people. At least not at first, then the pranks and cheap shots come out.” He laughed, revealing the light-hearted camaraderie within the team.
Mila added, ” If you’re available when we have practice, feel free to turn up. We have a friendly team and nice instructors. Just join us and have fun. The important thing is to enjoy yourself. Come to the practice time that suits you, and don’t feel obligated to come to every session—I know people are so busy with their studies and activities at Woodcrest.”
As the practice session wrapped up, the exhaustion on Bobb and Mila’s faces was evident, but so too was their determination. The university swim team is poised for a season that promises not just victories but the continuous pursuit of excellence.
