Dancing Through the Decades: Spirit Week’s Flashback Fiesta

Article and photography by Alex FoXx

Woodcrest’s Spirit Week hit its most vibrant high note on Friday with Decades Day a wild, wonderful throwback bash that transformed The Quad into a time-traveling dance floor. From bell-bottomed disco queens to Y2K pop icons, students came dressed to represent their favorite eras while DJ Guinness spun hit after nostalgic hit.

DJ Guinness introduced himself with infectious energy and kicked things off with a rockin’ 1950s set. With each track, the crowd got more animated, swinging to Elvis, twisting to Little Richard, and breaking out flapper fringe, lava lamp socks, neon crop tops, and even a Furby or two.

The themed backdrops were a visual feast. One side featured a diner scene straight out of the 1950s, while the other exploded with 90s pop stars, cassette tapes, and boom boxes. The vibe was pure throwback magic.

Melody Blade declared herself an 80s Barbie and twirled in platform heels. Her outfit wasn’t just for show—she danced nonstop, echoing the energy of the whole event. She also joked that she wouldn’t be leaving her bed for three days after Spirit Week.

Laughter, music, and a few cheeky snacks (gummies, anyone?) floated through the night air as students mingled, sang along, and let loose. Bonni Starlight, decked out in full hippie flair, played it cool with a fake joint and a wink. She assured the others it was just for the outfit, though the snack tent saw more than a few suspiciously eager visits. Even a short technical hiccup when the music cut out briefly couldn’t dull the party. Bonni declared confidently that she would dance to the music in her head, proving that the spirit of the decades doesn’t need a sound system.

As the night closed out to the Bee Gees’ Stayin’ Alive and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, there was one thing everyone agreed on: Decades Day wasn’t just a costume party, it was a celebration of how far we’ve come, one dance move at a time.

Until next Spirit Week, stay groovy, Woodcrest.
