Sharp Style: Bringing Cacti into Your Space

Article by Loneleigh Resident

From the spiny silhouettes of golden barrel cacti to the whimsical arms of bunny ears, these desert dwellers come in all shapes and personalities. Their minimal care requirements make them perfect for dorm rooms, apartments, or sunny corners in any home. With their sculptural forms and resilient nature, cacti make excellent companions for anyone easing into the world of indoor gardening.

Cacti are a type of succulent, but what sets them apart is their unique ability to store water in their thick, ribbed stems and survive in arid conditions. This drought tolerance makes them a forgiving choice, especially for those who tend to forget a watering or two.

The key to cactus care lies in light and drainage. Most cacti thrive in bright, direct sunlight, so placing them on a sunny windowsill or in a south-facing room is ideal. They crave warmth and light, much like their natural desert habitats. Use a gritty, well-draining soil mix specifically designed for cacti and succulents. A pot with a drainage hole is a must, as standing water is the enemy of cactus roots. Terracotta pots are especially well-suited for cacti, as they help wick away excess moisture.

Watering should be done sparingly. During the active growing season, typically spring and summer, water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between watering. In fall and winter, most cacti enter a period of dormancy and require even less water, sometimes only once a month or less depending on your home’s humidity. Cacti are also easy to propagate. Many varieties grow offsets, or “pups,” at their base, which can be gently removed and planted in their own pots. With a bit of patience, you’ll find your collection growing naturally.

Whether you’re a seasoned plant lover or just dipping your toes into the soil, a cactus offers a bold and beautiful introduction to indoor gardening. Let it remind you that even in the driest times, life finds a way to bloom.
