Common Spring Illnesses and How to Stay Healthy

Article by Griselda Martinez-Longfall

As spring arrives, so do seasonal health concerns. Common illnesses during this time include seasonal allergies (hay fever), asthma flare-ups, and respiratory infections like the common cold and flu. These conditions are often triggered by increased pollen levels, changing weather, and lingering viruses.

COMMON SPRING ILLNESSES

Seasonal Allergies (Hay Fever)

Cause:Increased pollen counts from trees, grasses, and weeds can trigger an overreaction from the immune system.
Symptoms: Sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy eyes, and throat.
Management: Over-the-counter antihistamines, nasal sprays, and decongestants can help relieve symptoms. Avoid allergens by keeping windows closed and using air purifiers.

Asthma

Cause: Spring allergens, such as pollen, can trigger asthma symptoms in individuals with the condition.
Symptoms: Wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.
Management: Follow an asthma action plan, use prescribed medications (such as inhalers), and minimize exposure to known triggers.

Respiratory Infections

Cause: Viruses like the common cold and flu can still be prevalent in the spring.
Symptoms: Sore throat, cough, fever, body aches, and fatigue.
Management: Rest, stay hydrated, and use over-the-counter medications for symptom relief. Seek medical advice if symptoms worsen or become severe.

OTHER SPRING ILLNESSES

– Gastroenteritis: Norovirus, a leading cause of stomach flu, can thrive in warmer weather, leading to nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
– Lyme Disease: Transmitted by ticks, Lyme disease becomes a concern as ticks become more active in the spring. Early symptoms include fever, fatigue, and a bullseye-shaped rash.
– Skin Rashes & Pink Eye: Exposure to allergens, irritants, or infections can lead to rashes and eye infections.
– Sinus Infections: Seasonal allergies and lingering colds can contribute to sinus congestion and infections.

TIPS TO STAY HEALTHY IN THE SPRING

Wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs.
Avoid touching your face to reduce the risk of infections.
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids to support your immune system.
Get enough sleep to help your body fight off illnesses effectively.
Manage stress, as chronic stress can weaken your immune defenses.
Keep up with vaccinations, including the flu shot and other recommended immunizations.
Clean your home regularly to reduce allergens and germs.
Take allergy precautions if you’re prone to seasonal allergies—consider using air filters, keeping windows closed, and taking preventive medications.
Seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen, especially for respiratory conditions or infections.

By taking these precautions, you can enjoy a healthier and more comfortable spring season.
