Blessings I Declare

Special Feature by Austin Mitchell

In autumn’s glow, when earth and sky align,
I pause to give my thanks for gifts divine.
For harvests reaped and bonds of love and care,
I honor life and blessings I declare.

On Massachusetts’s coast, in days of yore,
The Saints arrived to brave what lay in store.
With faith, they sought a place to plant and grow,
yet winter’s bite brought famine, pain, and woe.
The Wampanoags, with kindness in their heart,
did teach them to grow corn with fish, to start.
They stood together, side by side as kin,
against the Narragansett tribe to win.
Together feasting, bonds of peace were laid,
a moment of thanksgiving proudly made.

Beyond these shores, the world in thanks unites
with customs vast and tales of shared delights.
In Japan, Kinrō Kansha marks the day
to honor workers’ efforts with display.
In Germany, Erntedank is revered,
with fruits of harvest, gratitude is cheered.
In Ghana, Homowo unity is grand;
with maize and yams, they celebrate the land.

I give my thanks for roots that run so deep;
A home of love where faith and morals keep.
My parents wise, devout, and firm yet kind,
They shaped my heart and nurtured well my mind.
A stable childhood, free from fear and strife,
That guides and strengthens me throughout my life.
They paved the way, ensured my path was clear,
Preparing me for college, dreams held near.

At Woodcrest, close to home, I’ve found an ace,
with sandy shores and time to seek my place.
Here, I am granted space to find my way,
to learn and grow, to conquer each new day.
Where wisdom flows from those who teach with care,
and opportunities to learn are there.
Their lessons guide, their knowledge lights the way,
a gift that shapes my future every day.

Thank you, my brothers, Delta Alpha Mu,
a family forged in loyalty so true.
We toast and laugh and plan our events grand;
through studies, love, and talks, we always stand.
And Mariella, a wild spirit, free;
she taught me life’s unknown and yet to be.
Her tempest stirs the winds of chance and change;
she makes life’s journey volatile and strange.

For friendships dear and loves that light my days,
I give my thanks in countless heartfelt ways.
This day, reflect on all you hold most dear,
And give your thanks for gifts with heart sincere.
