Literature of Love

A few weeks ago, I attended a session of Literature of Love, which explored Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. The lecture hall was almost standing room only—a testament to the popularity of Dr. Linda Wagstaff’s courses. Dr. Wagstaff is a treasure for Woodcrest University, known for her in-depth, detail-rich lectures that also provide ample opportunities for students to engage and contribute. Her analysis of Wuthering Heights focused on its unique status in love literature, with its intense exploration of passion, obsession, and revenge.

Dr. Wagstaff highlighted the central relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, whose passionate love and cruelty form the heart of Wuthering Heights. Set against the stark Yorkshire Moors, the bleak landscape reflects the intense emotions of the characters. Heathcliff, devastated by Catherine’s marriage to Edgar Linton, returns after years of absence, wealthy and vengeful. His cruelty extends to Edgar and his sister Isabella, whom he marries and mistreats.

The novel, as Dr. Wagstaff explained, blurs the line between love and violence. Heathcliff’s reaction to Catherine’s death is not one of grief but rage, driving him to almost exhume her body. This obsession defies traditional morality, as Heathcliff faces no clear punishment and dies seemingly content, haunted by Catherine’s spirit. The novel’s ambiguity and refusal to fit within a moral framework are what give it its lasting power.

Dr. Wagstaff emphasized how Wuthering Heights transcends conventional love stories, intertwining love and cruelty in a way that challenges interpretation. Rather than teaching moral lessons, the novel presents a world fueled by passion, ending not with redemption but with a grim, timeless vision of love and obsession.

Every lecture with Dr. Wagstaff is an adventure in learning. Her ability to unravel complex themes and invite students into rich, thought-provoking discussions makes each session an immersive experience. Whether exploring the depths of love, obsession, or morality, she brings fresh insight to every text. No student should miss out on the opportunity to attend one of her lectures, as they are not only intellectually stimulating but also deeply engaging, leaving a lasting impact on all who participate.
